The BFG (2016) Movie Review

The movie “The BFG”, a Disney Film that is directed by Steven Spielberg, is based and written by one of the world’s greatest storytellers, Roald Dahl. Written by one of the greatest storytellers, this movie will turn your imaginations on and make your bonds with people stronger, as this movie is open to all ages that showcases a friendly relationship.

It tells a story about Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), a 10 year old Brittish little girl who is from London, exploring the wonders and dangers of Giant Country introduced by the giant who prefers to be called The BFG (Mark Rylance). There are other inhabitants of Giant Country, but is meaner compared to BFG, the other giants who are mean, twice as big, and twice as scary and have been known to eat humans or “beans” as what they call them. Because of Sophie’s presence in Giant Country, the mean giants got attracted to her scent and turned their attentions to finding the little “bean” girl to eat for they have not eaten for so long. Soon, Sophie and the BFG went to the Queen (Penelope Wilton) seeking for help in making a plan to get rid of the mean giants.

This film was pretty heartwarming because it shows the relationship between a little girl befriending a giant. The animation throughout the film was fascinating, as it could catch and attract a Kid’s eyes with its colorful scenes and 3D animation together with an imagination setting.

One favorite scene of mine was the hilarious Fart scene. People who drank his Frobscottle drink farted loudly. It was a short moment in the movie that was hilarious. The characters were all appealing, although one actor that shined for me was the little girl, Sophie. Although she was new to acting, she knew to take advantage of being herself as a little kid who can really show curiousity of her surroundings and befriending someone despite their appearances.

I would give this movie an 8 out of 10 stars. Everyone should watch this movie with their families and friends for this movie shows a relationship regarding friendship and a great story.

Painitan/Putohan of Dumaguete City

Dumaguete’s Painitan is a spot you can never miss out on and is best for a complimentary breakfast.

You can always pay a quick visit to this place, as it is just located in Building 5, Public Market of Dumaguete City, where it is open (literally; open-aired stalls) and accessible for everyone. As a walking distance from the City’s Cathedral Church, church goers can go there right after mass at dawn because the Painitan opens at 3:30 am and some even earlier than 3 am.

For the old folks, earlybirds, and morning joggers, this place is a/their go-to place to eat, as the food of Painitan will surely help them warm their bodies up and energize their systems with freshly made food “Puto and Tsokolate” (Sticky Rice cake with Hot Chocolate made from pure tablia) together with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate drink also known as sikwate

(A secret to share for the sweet tooths- you can always ask for a PHP5 worth of condensed milk to be drizzled in your puto or hot chocolate drink.)

This place surely does tell you why they are called Painitan.

It is not only the puto and tsokolate that they have; they also cook eggs, hotdogs, and the famous delicacy, made fresh from Tanjay, the so called Budbud made from rice and the Budbud Kabog made from pure millet, which is at a higher price that is PHP 25, for it is finer in texture and sweeter than the Budbud made from rice at the price of PHP 10. They also have the Budbud with chocolate around it, wrapped with oily banana leaves. All around, prices are still affordable and cheap.

If you thought it closes at 10 o’clock in the morning, then you are lucky, because this Painitan closes in the afternoon. Some Painitan stalls closes at 5 pm and some closes at 6 pm.

Though, the ambiance is not that great for it is in the market and beside the road, but it is bearable, for because the people around are kind and welcoming with their big smiles, especially when tourists are their costumers. This is because the locals are so hospitable and wants the tourist to have a part of their “locality”- a piece of Dumaguete. Greeted with this warm welcome, you will surely want to come back.

I would greatly recommend this place to you and let you have a taste of Dumaguete’s Painitan.

Art To Business

As we all know, Art has been around since the Prehistoric times. We have known that our ancestors didn’t learn how to write, yet they have learned how to use and make the pigments, documenting through painting their day-to-day experiences just like the paintings we see on certain caves existing from the prehistoric period. From then on, people started to have different views on what their type of art is. Artist have created different art mediums not just by a simple drawing, but paintings, mosaics, sculptures, photography, and etc.  For this had existed from a long time ago, artists have developed different techniques with different materials in order to produce; from painting different sized dots to painting with their own blood on canvases.

Art – the concious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects. ( Merriam-Webster 2017 )

Art may not have a universal definition, but in my opinion, it is a learning and productive process of having to express emotions, thoughts, feelings, language, ideas, and events into different mediums.

Audiences

Art is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone will have their own interpretation. ( E. A. Bucchianeri )

Our interpretations are based on who we are, what we are, and what we like.
Like a paper that was folded, cut, or held-the way I wanted, YOU gave it a meaning and interpreted it as to – folded, was because I was shy; cut, was because I was angry and; held, was because I was confident. You interpret it the way you define it. We can interpret through the 5 senses. We use our eyes to see, hands to touch, heart to feel, ears to listen, and tongue to taste.

Different people give off different reaction due to people having their own preferences and perspectives about their type of art. (This is just like a graffiti on a wall, some people passing by might like it, some might be disturbed, and some might just pass by and ignore it, either they saw it or they just didn’t really have any interest in them.)

Business

In the Early 1900, as movies, theaters, and other forms of art experienced a rise in their industry. This growth lead these “Art” reach a wider range of audience. (The Age of Imperialism)

In order to create your own art business, you first have to know what mediums you are going to make and then sell; having to create your pieces. For you to sell really good, you may have to create your own sense of “unique” style that gives it its character to make it a bit different from the other styles. If you are not into business but want to sell, you might have to find a business partner for you to ask help in selling your arts.

You just have to turn your imagination to reality.
